Bacterial Meningitis Symptoms

Bacterial Meningitis Symptoms

Bacterial meningitis symptoms may evidence suddenly (often resulting in death) or over one or two days. In some cases, bacterial meningitis may strike suddenly, resulting in death within a few hours.

Even when the symptoms of bacterial meningitis appear over a couple of days it is essential that the patient be treated as early as possible. The longer the delay in receiving appropriate treatment, the higher the likelihood of severe and permanent brain damage.

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis include:

  • Persistent high fevers
  • Severe headaches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Lethargy or drowsiness that gets progressively worse

Newborns and young infants may not be able to communicate their symptoms. Signs to watch for include constant crying, unusual sleepiness or irritability, jaundice and lack of interest in food. Because of the severe consequences of bacterial meningitis – particularly to young children and infants, pediatricians should be acutely aware of the disease and should test for it when appropriate.

If your child is a victim of bacterial meningitis and you suspect that your physician or an ER doctor failed to diagnose bacterial meningitis when the symptoms first appeared, you may have a claim for medical malpractice.

Please contact an experienced meningitis attorney with The Meningitis Lawyers Network. We will evalutate your child's case for free and help maximize your child's financial recovery.
